Reasons and Drivers of Early Marriage: Insights from Iranian Context

Abstract

Despite the rise in the mean age of marriage for women in Iran, a significant number of girls still marry before the age 18. This study aimed to explore the reasons and factors driving early marriage of girls in Iran. Data from 4813 girls who participated in the National Marriage Survey were examined. Results revealed that 13.6% experience early marriage. The prevalent reasons include “Provision of marriage Preconditions,” “love,” and “parental coercion.” Such marriages were more common when parents made the marriage decisions. Baluch (32%), Arab (25%), and Turk (17.5%) ethnicities demonstrated the highest ratios. Parental characteristics notably influenced the probability of early marriage. Furthermore, access to media platforms and social networks, correlated with a reduced probability of early marriage. Gender equality within families emerges as a crucial factor in curbing such marriages, alongside government policies aimed at empowering women.
